Annunciation

Annunciation-full-size.jpeg

The above artwork by Betony Coons is called “Annunciation.” I first encountered it through The Advent Project that was put together by the Biola University Center for Christianity Culture and the Arts. It, of course, depicts the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary. The story is in Luke 1:26–38.

I found myself drawn to it, because I have a 17 year old daughter. Most believe Mary could have been even younger than this. Considering her age, Mary was remarkably humble and receptive to the words of Gabriel. Consider Mary’s words in response to Gabriel’s astonishing announcement:

“I am the Lord’s servant,” said Mary. “May it be done to me according to your word.”

Hearing Mary, I pray that my daughter, too, would grow to be as receptive to the Lord’s leading in her life. This is also my prayer for my two sons, of course. But as the father of a teenage girl, I am struck by the mystery and beauty of this angelic encounter and the way God entered Mary’s life for his redemptive purposes. May each of us seek the humility and openness to God that Mary exemplifies.
