Every Morning

Because of the LORD’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!

Lamentations 3:22-23

Sunrises are beautiful. Surely God is the Artist. Every day begins with a work of art on the horizon that reminds us that we can begin again. Whatever happened the on day or days before, God extends his mercy once again.

And that’s good news. I’ve had days where I’ve reached the point when I just wanted the day to be over, to crawl into bed however tired or frustrated, in hopes that starting again the following morning will give me the chance to begin afresh.

Maybe you’ve had those days too.

Of course, not every actual morning carries with it entirely new circumstances. We wake up all too aware of our pain, grief, and worry. One night’s sleep didn’t eliminate our troubles. A difficult day has long since been a difficult season. For some, it’s a difficult life and that’s all there is to it,

Listen to what the Lord says through his prophet Jeremiah:

I will turn their mourning into joy, give them consolation, and bring happiness out of grief.

Jeremiah 31:13

But, we ask, “When?”

Glimpses can be had in this life of the comfort and joy to come. We treasure them, are blessed by them, and take solace in them. But ultimately we await the dawning of an entirely new day.

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.

Revelation 21:4

Every morning, every sunrise in this life both tells us that God persists daily in his love for us and that there will arrive all the fullness of what each new day now merely hints at: resurrection, eternity, and joy unspeakable.
